Don't help this man ruin the movies he watches... Never understood crazy people who don't mind watching stretched, out of proportions video.
That's how the movie was shot. Why would you want to change that.
the movies are cropped with black bars
In all but rare cases, the movie is not cropped. That is, the black bars are not hiding any of the picture from you.
What you are asking for is either to crop the left and right sides off the picture or to stretch the picture vertically so that the picture fills your entire screen. IMO, cropping off the sides is bad, and stretching is even worse.

Press 'Format' repeatedly..
Just means that your media (film or tv show) has a different aspect ratio to your tv.
In my opinion, leave it. You can stretch the image vertically to fill the whole screen but that will look distorted and isn't the true image.
Or, the better option, you can scale up the image to fill the screen but you'll be cutting out the left and right sides of the image to do so. Again, unacceptable in my opinion.
There are multiple aspect ratios that different filmmakers use and this is compounded by the choices distributors can make when releasing a film or a show so this will always be an issue in some way shape or form
Have you tried with NovaPlayer or VLC Player. It has the fullscreen stretch option.
Just keep changing aspect ratio till you get the right one.. Check the android display settings ..
Don’t
Why would you want to watch a stretched movie?
