I've tried a few apps to play HDR content, but none of them seems to be switching the TV into HDR mode.

Have you tried Nova Video Player ?
MX player works perfectly fine on my TCL Android TV
Try Vimu Media Player
VLC is quite a powerful app, have you try it?
