Trying to put together something for a family member to watch movies from on their TV from and HDD or SSD, I am also buying the HDD or SSD they'll use so at least I can insure that will be compatible. I need it to play back videos deally in multiple formats (MKV, ect) and have some easy to use controls on the TV. The house doesn't have a computer to use otherwise I would just set up a media server and play it from a console.

I looked at Nvidia shield and that looked a bit too expensive for the Christmas budget.

Looking for recommendation, doesn't need to be very functional for internet streaming or anything else.
