What i wanna do is play movies from my phone on VLC and watch them on the tv BUT from the VLC app with the VLC menu etc, not just stream it to the tv. Can anybody help?

You should be able to cast the video with VLC to the Sony TV, assuming it's running Android TV. On the top right of VLC is the cast icon, tap that and you should see your TV on the list. Just make sure both the phone and the TV are on the same network.
