I just got my second Android tv, upgraded from an old androidtv 5.1 to a new android tv 9. I used to watch yt throught smartyttv app before but then I heard that the development got stalled and people started to recommend smartytnext but I saw some recent changes on smartyttv's github. So, for a lightweight UI and a player that really remove ads, which one is better?
Edit: looking on both github pages, I realised both are from the same dev.
Gonna get downvoted to hell for saying this, but I loathe material design on Android TV. I find it inefficient and unintuitive, and kinda ugly. I'm happy to use the old app so I don't have to deal with it, even if it's a bit slower or has less features. It's fast enough on my Shield, and it's got enough features to satisfy me.
Sucks that the developer is abandoning SmartYoutubeTV. SmartYoutubeNext is ugly as hell. I love how SmartYoutubeTV is lowkey. Like, yeah, I’m a modded YouTube app but you can’t tell the difference because I look just like the original. SmartTubeNext is all blatant about it.
That being said though, SmartTubeNext is unfortunately better now. Even though it’s ugly, it’ll be supported and get updates. Some folks I know have SmartYoutubeTV and say that they have to live with bugs (like pressing the back button twice).
I uninstalled after realising that we can't subscribe to new channels in new app.
And tbh material themes look kinda weird/ugly on TV.
Unfortunately SmartYoutubeTv allows me to cast while SmartYoutubeNext doesn't :(

Smart tube next works way faster on my Android TV, even tho some dont like its design. I prefer speed over design anyways.
Smart YouTubeTV as a brand name is confusing now that there's actually something called YouTube TV, which isn't YouTube and isn't something that Smart YouTubeTV works with. They should just rebrand them all to YouTubeNext
Next. It's much smoother, more stable, and has all the features I need (previews, playback speed, yeah!)
I'd go with next. Same developer as smart and (s)he seems more interested in next. Next is MUCH faster to start on my Philips.
SmartYoutubeNext only recommends me videos by topic on the home screen. Anyway i can get the home screen like normal YouTube? Like I want the recommended video feed.
I'm still using Smart Youtube TV for how because the Watch Later list is much better. I don't like everything being in one row and not being able to set it as the default page when starting the app.
It's never heard of either of these but thought I'd try them. I've installed SmartYoutubeTV and signed in but, though it's showing my name in the top left, it's not showing my profile picture and none of my subscriptions are there???
guess i'll try next. the interface looks kinda bad but the player looks much better. and the bugs are getting annoying.

Unfortunately smart tube next video is choppy at 2x bcoz all videos are coming at 30 fps
I dont like the next's UI and wanna stay with the old, but they made a update that disables the addblocker "asholes" trying to force ppl onto the new next version.
Anyway i have the old APK and can reinstall it and all is good for like 2 weeks then i need to do it again.
How do i disable the auto updater in the old smartyoytube ?
Or is there a way to make the next look 100% like the old?
Smart Tube Next is the new version from the same dev, yes. It uses native android controls and is much faster. The speed difference is even noticeable on my shield, so I imagine it'll be huge on low-end devices.
