4K HDR + Dolby Atmos on the Shield TV

by whostolemyusrname

I am running into some performance issues while trying to direct-play some 4K content with Plex on my Shield TV.

Sometimes it just stutters a whole bunch, but other time the UI becomes unresponsive and I have to restart it. Sometimes I can fix it by changing the audio stream to something other than atmos.

Does anyone else experience anything like this?

I have an LG TV, and when using Plex for WebOS I can play the media just fine. Both the TV and Shield TV are connected via ethernet. And I have double checked that it is direct-playing and not transcoding.

Go into plex settings on shield. Check that you are using the new player. I changed to that and all freezing and stuttering has stopped. Hope this helps you

I think the problem is the HDMI cable connected to the Shield. I say this because you have zero issues playing the same content on the TV's native Plex app, so that rules out a problem with the TV itself and your internet connection (since if either was a problem, the same issues would occur with the app). Further, the fact that when you switch to a less data-intensive audio stream and it can work, tells me that the cable is oversaturated; that is to say, HDR + DA is too much for it to handle.

Assuming you're still on HDMI 2.0, look for a premium and certified HDMI cable (or just use an HDMI 2.1 cable) and that should fix the problem.

The other issue could be the Shield, although I doubt that.

Do you have the Tube or the Pro version ? Had exactly that on my tube and had to return it for a pro.
