Want to upgrade TV to stream games (Australia)

by strebor2095

Hey subreddit! Here is my situation: I tried to stream from my computer to my Chromecast, and had a pro controller connected to my computer in the adjacent room. The lag was making my games not really playable, so I looked around

My end result is getting a TV or connected device that allows me to use Steamlink.

I have come to the conclusion that I want to get an Android TV, but I am not sure what is good. I have decided against the Kogan Smart TV based on reviews.

My budget is around $400, but if it's from Amazon / JB Hi-Fi I have the option to cash out a gift card from my workplace for an additional $200 and can go up by that amount. The TV unit that it would be on is 36.5", so the TV would preferably be able to fit on there, around 36-40" screen size. Also happy to consider a media device like NVIDIA shield if anyone knows any good Black Friday deals!

I will probably connect this TV via ethernet cable to my modem to decrease lag? Bit of a noob on this stuff.

If the existing tv is good then i strongly recommend a shield tv or other ethernet android tv devices as a $400 TV's baked in smart hardware/software would be pretty shocking

This site is great, community reported deals

You're honestly better off getting an Android TV stick device.

I have a 2017 Bravia that is nowhere near needing replacement in the TV department, but it's stuck on Android 8.0. Kind of a bummer because I can't justify upgrading just for a better Android experience.

Edit: And yes, get a device that has ethernet!

Stream games? No. I have my NVIDIA Shield and PC both connected by ethernet cable and still feels like I'm drunk when trying to stream Call of Duty, the lag is significantly noticeable even in local environment.

To be real, Chromecast will outperform 99% of Android Smart TV in the market, so your best choice is still get an Android tv box with your current tv, play emulator and feel happy about it. Even if you are streaming, consider games that tolerates lags.
