Need a decent midrange TV for watching movies offline

by UindiaUwin

I have a habit of downloading movies/videos, and then watching them later offline. Not a big fan of 4k yet. Most important aspect is that I only care about streaming .mp4 .mkv etc. movies file formats flawlessly like I'm watching it on a cable TV. I don't stream content on Netflix, Plex, Kodi etc. online. I mostly just watch movies on my laptop and phone using players like VLC, MPC, MX player that pretty much fullfill all the needs.

Does any TV fullfill my need? I'm not looking for an expensive TV. A midrange TV should do that job since I don't want to stream online content which is what most people need. I only want to watch movies after having them transferred to the TV internal storage. Also, let me know if I'd be needing external boxes like Firestick or something.

By far, I think Android TVs are good as they have more features and allow you to install third party .apk files. But since I am planning to use it prolong time so it'll be good if it's durable. I have only had experience with CRT TVs by now so help me out guys.

There is a lot of confusion for me while deciding which TV to go for because first: this is my first time buying a smart TV and second: I mostly see reviews and discussions based on stuff like watching online content while my needs are pretty simple and not requiring those things.

TL:DR : Decent midrange TV(Android or not) for playing movies offline. Online content watching like Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. is not the priority.

I assume from your username you are from India. I would suggest Hisense 40A56E or TCL 40S6500FS. Install plex on your laptop and access them through the plex client on the TV.

You havent mentioned the size and price, so i have suggested 40 inch around 20K.

Not sure what exactly you mean by midrange, but TCL makes pretty well-regarded, cheapish TVs, though they usually come installed with Roku and not Android TV. In the past I've used a TCL with an Nvidia Shield (Android TV) box to do what you're describing. Even if you're not streaming, I still like to use Plex or Kodi on the Shield, with a hard drive hooked directly to it, for direct playing my video files and having a nice TV interface to browse my media (which to me is far preferable to having to browse media folders and filenames in a VLC app or whatever).

Edit: One misconception I think you might have is that certain TVs are more expensive due to nicer streaming features. I think, though, that smart TV/streaming functionality (as well as 4K output) are pretty much standard features on nearly all new TVs, so what you'll be paying extra for (or skimping on) mostly would come down to picture quality or the more high-end 4K/HDR features.

Hisense might work

Honestly you would be better off with one of those CoreELEC Kodi boxes like a cheap 4GB RAM X96 Air or X96 Max with a WeChip ā€Gā€ series wireless remote:

That combo will handle anything you throw at it much better vs any Smart TV or Android device. Snappy too !

The bonus with CoreELEC is you can hookup a USB hard drive and because it has an already included SAMBA file server, you can transfer files across and home network to that USB storage very easily.

Drag and drop, however Gigabit Ethernet is needed for that.

So you need a 4GB RAM device that has 1000M LAN.
