Hulu app issues with Chromecast with Google TV

by xWizardux

Hulu has been bothering me on Chromecast with Google TV where it freezes the screen when playing ads. The audio continues but the screen does not change. I have had mixed results with rebooting Chromecast to resolve the issue. Does anyone know how to force close an app in Chromecast with Google TV or has a resolution to this problem?

Did you ever figure out a resolution to this? I have the exact same issue.

I have Hulu but do not have this issue...you may need to provide more info for people to help. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app?

To answer your question, from the home page, go to your Google avatar, Settings, Apps. At the top will be Recently Opened Apps, select the app you want to close, then select Force Stop.

Is your router using iPv6? Try disabling iPv6 on the Chromecast and rebooting. See if that helps your issue. (I've had a similar experience in the past with my Shield that had Android TV on it)

Not related directly, but I think it's worth raising here.

Without ads, I'm getting occasional stuttering in the Hulu app.

Here's the interesting thing, if I project from my phone to the Chromecast, initiating the feed from my phone, the stuttering goes away, seems to actually be a higher frame rate, and the image quality improves. I monitored the bitrate through my router from both casting and playing from the app, and the bitrate seems to be the same. I haven't done deeper network sniffing yet to see if they are the same streams, but both are less than 10Mbs and well within the bandwidth available.

So, if these are the same streams, I think the problem could be with the Hulu app and more than just an IP v6 routing issue. I find it odd because once the stream is playing, resource usage should be about the same as when casting -- the Chromecast will have to read the video stream, decode, and render it over the HDMI. It seems as though the Hulu app might be using it's own decoder which is less capable and causes rendering artifacts.

Try casting from another device and see if you still see the same problems.

Just wanted to add I am facing this issue as well. Has anyone found a solution?

Also noticed a show I am watching now plays in HD with google tv and plays in 4K on another tv which doesn’t have Google tv. The one that plays in 4K is also far from my router compared to Google tv which sits 10 cm to my router

Reinstalling worked for me for about 2 episodes of Letterkenny, then I had to do it again. Why are Hulu's apps such garbage...
