Can I Manually upgrade my Android TV ?

by Aytunes

Hey guys,

Yesterday I wanted to install Google TV on my Phillips AndroidTV (55POS9002) and the installation of the Launcher apk crashed. I later discovered that my TV is running on AndroidTV 8 and 9 is necessary for the new GoogleTV...

I don't want to started a new thread where we discuss how bad the updates are on AndroidTV from the Manufacturer. It's bad.

But, I was wondering, when AndroidTV is basically android, it is possible to root my TV and install a custom ROM?

It's not worth rooting a TV so I recommend that you just wait till Phillips or Google release an update.

That is an extremely dangerous notion and an excellent way to brick your TV. If you want really want Google TV then spend the money for the new Chromecast.

It is possible but TVs has far less support than phones. It's not worth it

My Sony Bravia is not getting any further updates and I would love to root it and apply the newest update. Please tell me I can do this. Are there any custom ROMs for TVs?

Just try the following because it does not disable the default Android TV launcher.

You can flip flop between the Google TV launcher and Android TV:
