Do I abandon my AndroidTV?

by ZombieLeftist

I have a Sony Bravia X900E in the 55-inch. It's a beautiful display as I believe most Sony televisions are - but the software support leaves so much to be desired. It's on Android 8 right now I believe:

  1. How clear is it that Sony is abandoning us?

  2. Should I just be done with it and go GoogleTV Chromecast?

  3. What do I stand to lose? This is the biggest question I have.

It sounds like the new GoogleTV Chromecast is based on reported-metrics. They built it support the models and technology that 90% of everyone uses, and I just want to know I'm not in the 10% that are about to be left in the dust because I have some incompatible speaker system or whatever.

Edit: Flared Discussion because I don't really need help. This is an almost philosophical discussion.

The new Google TV dongle will be snappier vs the old Chipset in your old Sony X900E.

The only comparable 2019 & 2020 Sony 4K TV's are the X85G, X95G, A9G and all the 2020 Models.

The 2020 X90H has the most powerful chipset out of - any - Smart TV on the market, it's more powerful vs the Google TV dongle. See this thread:

Use the X900E as a dumb display and Apps on an external media player device if the Sony is too slow.

The real question should be... Do you really getting problems with the current system. So what if it's 8.0, if its streaming your stuff fine, it's not randomly hang-up, doesn't crash apps... Why do you even care.

When it becomes so sluggish that you start to feel it and it becomes annoying... Time for a new streaming device.

Keep it, I have android on my sony, connected to a roku, connected to a fire cube. Add devices as needed/wanted.

I have the same tv , my question is should I upgrade? I run everything from a 2019 shield pro. Will I notice a better picture quality with a new sony , if so which one , so many models is overwhelming. I only watch TV with yttv and the major streaming apps , no gaming. I don't necessarily need it but the hdr on this tv is horrible. Opinions are appreciated.

ATV2 is getting Android Pie, which is same chipset as yours. And mine of X800D. Has started rolling out in Latin America. And ATV2 generation of chipsets is on Pie as confirmed on Google Play Console.

Might take four or five months though for the full roll-out, as what happened with Oreo on Sony TVs

Check the Sony support website for your TV, you might find firmware updates for your model.
