On my shield, I can press the Home button twice real fast and it brings up a recently used apps list. Is this really not a thing on the new Chromecast? I even tried to use the button mapper app to active it, but no luck. Am I missing something?

That's not native feature on Android TV. It's on Nvidia Shield only. That's the reason why I owned a MI Box for 5 minutes, and returned it.
App drawer and recent apps gone for now. Let's hope these features will return, they are really useful.
I have 3 different android tv devices and not one of them has this function. So its not android tv function, its exclusive to shield.
