Working USB Hub for the New Chromecast Google TV

by war_pig

So I bought a this hub/docking station awhile back for my Tivo 4k Stream TV and unfortunately it didn't work and since I bought it while it was on sale I kept it. Glad I did because it works perfectly with the new google tv at least for ethernet. Even the 3.5mm headphone jack works! All USB ports work.

Anyway, the only thing that I can't test are the microsd and sdcard because I don't have any functioning cards. I think it should work though.

I have gigabit internet and looks like I'm only getting 300+mbps which is not bad really. I also tried using a Gigabit USB to Ethernet connected to the USB port (instead of using the hub ethernet) and I was getting same speeds

I think the dock/hub I bought was an older version and the same company released a new one. But this is a good sign!

EDIT: forgot to mention the Google TV experience itself, I'm not really sure. I have Nvidia Shield, MiBox S, Verizon Steam TV, Tivo 4k Stream -- I don't know if I like it yet. I feel like the home page of the new Google TV is clunky. It is displaying too much information. I can't find an option to clean or remove some information in the google TV homescreen. But then again that's just me. Device is blazing fast though!

EDIT2: I just found out under the Account Settings (not the general settings) that you can actually only show Apps mode. So those Recommendations will not show up in the home page and its not going to be super cluttered

EDIT3: So -- Apps mode looks nice and clean but the google playstore is not on the 1st page/home page! So you have to go to apps under setting scroll down for play store and open it from there. I wish I could use the google assistant microphone but in Apps Mode, it disables that too. So to use this device at it's full potential, you have to use it with all those clutter in the home page. If you are used to the old Android TV homepage (that you can customize) .. you might need some time to get used to this -- unless I'm missing something here.

EDIT4: Might want to mention that the dock/hub gets abnormally warm. Not sure because I used the power brick that came with the Google TV. It's warm that I would consider not plugging it 24/7. Ill do further testing with other USB power sources.

EDIT5: I took the risk and bought this (only 1 review) -- BUT you need a different power adapter -- the power brick that came with the Google TV is not enough. So factor that in to the overall cost. I have a lot of USB-C power adapters from laptops/chromebooks and I used it -- I didnt have to spend extra. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FKNPDRS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

So.... 300mbps kind of confirms my suspicions that the usb-c port is utilizing usb 2.0 protocol hence the speed limitation. That’s about what I’ve seen using gigabit adapters with the original mibox and mibox s.

Edit: war_pig, thanks for this info.

So what about external hard drives? I was hearing it only accepted fat32, which would limit the size to 2 tb?

I bought a hub too but my chromecast does not detect the usb. Any idea why?

Do you think it would work with a headphone usb RF dongle, like the ones from steelseries?

FYI I used the Power Adaptor from a Google WiFi (USB C) with a Hub + Google TV and it worked, didn't get the underpowered error message

Guys, a friend of mine bought one of these hubs with a 3.5mm audio output and the problem is that whenever he connects the thing to the chromecast, audio gets cut out from the TV speaker, like something was connected to the headphone jack.

OP doesn't seem to have this problem, otherwise he would mention, or maybe he's using an external speaker like a soundbar or HT.

Do you guys know any workaround to get the sound working on the TV using these kind of hubs?
