What great things can you do with the power of a Shield that you likely can't do with a GoogleTV?

by Z3M0G

So I was waiting for GoogleTV reveal rather than jumping on getting an NVidia Shield... but this was when I mostly had game streaming in mind (Stadia / GeForceNow / XCloud).

But now that it's here, and I think of other things I perhaps COULD do with the device... maybe GoogleTV is not the way to go?

The mobile games that I would actually like to play are likely not available on AndroidTV store, unless perhaps they don't require much power and have controller support? (For Touch-only games, I would need to mirror I assume.)

What other types of handy applications are available when using BT mouse/keyboards? Can you do pretty much everything you want to do? Browsing / online banking / text editing / graphics editing?

Would this be a legit alternative to getting a chromebook perhaps? Connect it to a PC monitor with KB/M and you have a little work space...?

It would be sad if I pay for a GoogleTV and feel I gimped myself by not simply paying about double for a LOT more power/options...

Thanks!

Edit: Double checked... so it's more like $70 CDN vs $200-300 CDN... I think I just answered my own questions... it might not matter. GoogleTV + Chromebook later may make much more sense...

If you want to play those sweet, sweet GameCube games, the Shield TV is the way to go. Besides, its basically a Nintendo Switch, minus one gig of RAM lol

You can use the launcher comfortably without ads (they call it recommendations) of services that you don't have and you don't plan to have

The only difference between any of the Shield iterations and the rest of ATV devices are the processor, graphics, gigabit ethernet, USB 3.0, RAM and TrueHD/DTSHDMA passthrough.

There is one ATV device with Gigabit ethernet (Minix Neo T5).

There are newer devices with at least one USB 3.0 port.

The Mecool KM1 and KM3 are available in the 4GB RAM variants.

The original Mi Box used to support TrueHD/DTSHDMA passthrough but it was removed in the recent Android 9 firmware update.

Everything else is just the same.

The Nvidia Shield and the Xiaomi Mi Box S are the most popular but they are NOT the only devices out there. Since you live in Canada, I guess not all of the below examples are available in your region:

Certified Android TV devices WITH Netflix AND Prime Video certifications:

- Chromecast with Google TV

- AirTV Mini

- Ematic Jetstream

- Tivo Stream 4K

- Verizon Stream TV

- Xiaomi Mi TV Stick (1080p only)

Certified Android TV devices with ONLY Netflix certification:

- AT&T TV

- JBL Link Bar

Certified Android TV devices with ONLY Prime Video certification:

- Mecool KM1 (Available at mecoolonline.com )

- Mecool KM3 (Available at mecoolonline.com , where you can also download the NEW Android 10 firmware for this model)

- Mecool KM9 PRO (Available at mecoolonline.com , where you can also download the NEW Android 10 firmware for this model)

Certified Android TV devices WITHOUT Netflix AND Prime Video certifications:

- Channel Master Stream Plus (with ATSC dual tuner built-in but outdated Android TV version)

- Minix Neo T5 (With gigabit ethernet but remote control doesn't have a microphone)
