Android TV update

by faisalthe01

I was wondering how does the Android TV OS updates work for all the different brand devices work? Now OS 11 came out so each and every brand will have to release their own update or the OS 11 will be pushed out by Google to those certified brands?

This is not apple, it wont come to all devices. Upto manufacturers

As a general thumb rule, biggest disadvantage of Android (at every platform) is lack of updates. Androidtv isn't different from this generalization. Most devices, like 90% of androidtv devices (tv and boxes), will only receive only one or two major updates and that too after 6+ months or even stretching to years after the official release by Google.

For example, even the best androidtv device, shield, is still at android 9 and second most famous device, the mibox, is undergoing android 9 beta programme.

But all that said, fortunately, android updates doesn't matter much. Personally, I'd like to see that OEMs start prioritising security updates. For example my flagship TCL 2017/2018 androidtv only received one major android update and it has been stuck on years old security updates.

If updates is your priority, then I'd advice only go for shield if you have budget, else go for firestick. Amazon keeps them fairly updated, or atleast better than androidtv devices.

Edit: forgot to answer your actual question. 🙃🙃

General understanding is that, just like mobiles, OEMs are responsible for pushing updates but yesterday i read somewhere in comments in this sub itself that few androidtv devices updates are directly handled by Google, though this info is not made publicly available by OEMs.

Google sends it to the manufacturers, then they adapt their own twist and push it out. It should be out in about 3 months for download for most.
