TCL Android TV (50" C715): USB only FAT32, can't watch 4K movies over 4 GB. Fix?

by pinupwizard

As in the title, is there a way to overcome the USB port's FAT32 4GB limit for movies?

I can only watch 1080p movies from a thumb drive as it stands as any 4K .mkv file is just too large.

Is there a way I can trick Android TV to accept ExfAT or NTFS ?

Thanks in advance

Just plex it from the computer.

You won't be able to get your TV to read ntfs or larger files. Best to host a file server and stream off it to the TV. Kodi or VLC should be able to read network files. Use an old PC (simple file sharing options) or network router (some have USB ports), heck a raspberry pi will also work to host drives on a network.

Or re-encode

There are few things you can try -

  1. have you tried all other format for your usb? NTFS, ex-fat?
  2. manually "break" your video in parts using pc software. Too much work if you ask me.
  3. I'd say use another PC as Plex server. Again, not always possible, plus double the electricity usage.
  4. Best case scenario is you format your pen drive as permanent internal storage of the TV and then FTP your movie to it. For file explorer needs, I use Mixplorer in mobile as well as in my TV.

On a side-note, may I ask where are you from? I recently saw these two TVs as well, C715 and C815. Are they worth the price (what did you pay for it)? My current TCL has the worst androidtv implementation I have ever experienced.

I have the same exact tv and external HDD/USB drive formatted with NTFS is correctly recognized and I can correctly watch movies

It works with NTFS without problem for me.

Also, Plex gives a much better experience than the other apps! With the embedded mediaplayer, the "cinematic" ratio is playing zoomed (and deformed). With VLC & Kodi, I experience frame drops. With MX-Player, it works and you can download subtitles on the go, but the interface is crappy.

Plex works flawlessly for all media that were failing on other apps.
