Chromecast built-in when TV is off

by ferferga

Good morning all

So I have a new Android TV from TCL (model 40ES560) and I can't make the chromecast built-in work when the TV is off.

I want it to behave as my standalone Chromecast: always on and, whenever I cast something, the TV is turned on. However, this doesn't work in Android TV it seems.

I enabled fast startup and standby networking in settings, but no luck. The TV is connected using an Ethernet cable, not Wifi, and the lights in the switch are steady lit, but no luck in finding it in Fing or nmap, so I guess if this is more an issue in the TCL software.

Thank you very much in advance.

It works if the TV is in Sleep State. I always do that.

My Sony Android TV works the way you want so it's not a problem with Chromecast built-in. Must be a manufacturer thing, that's where you should raise the issue.

Same issue with my Philips TV which I guess is the same as TCL.

It works in standby but only if it's only been in standby for a short time.

Someone said they had luck by installing the Alexa app. Setting that up would then somehow mean Google Assistant would work when the TV is off.

It's the "intended" behavior according to Google, when I bought the Mi Box in 2017 I created a bug report at Google Issue Tracker, they immediately closed the report but said they were working on it, three years later we're still waiting...

Could you please add your comment about your bad experience at that report?, the more people, the merrier, we need to put some pressure on them, here's the link: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/66435696

What power saving settings are there? Unselect deep power saving or remove the power shutdown mode.

I bought one the other day and yesterday realized under the network settings there is a setting to allow casting when the device is in standby. That now enabled it for me.

I gave up and bought a Chromecast for this reason and to add my receiver to a group for whole house audio casting. When they're on sale they're certainly cheaper than the time I spent on forums searching.

TCL have lots of bugs. Even I face the same issue. I tried calling TCL support. They don't even know that such option existed in their tv. I love the TV, picture quality is really good but software bugs makes it crappy

Had the same problem with my Philips. Solved it by downloading the "Wakelock revamped" apk and sideloading it on my TV. You just need to open the app once and check "Processor", after that it works.

I get my Philips TV to stay alive by using WOL. I have my home assistant server send a packet every minute or so.

It's a stupid hacky solution to something that shouldn't even be a problem but it works.

I can confirm you all that clearing cache and data from Chromecast built-in and resetting the TV did not work. I'm still investigating possible solutions.

There's a setting under the network settings that allows for the network to stay on when tv is on standby. That will turn the TV on when you connect via chromecast.

@ferferga Did you solve this issue on your TCL? I tried the Wakelock with wifi normal + cpu enabled but that only worked for my Philips (with the same issue).
