Should I go for 4K streaming box for 1080p Projector?

by ssengg

Hi guys,

The title explains itself, recently I ordered 1080p smart projector but I'll use it with either Mi Box S or Mi Stick TV.

Mi Stick TV is way more practical for a projector as it doesn't need an extra plug and space around it. But Mi Box S is a more powerful device. So, I was wondering is there still any benefit to getting Mi Box S. I can bear with extra cabling if there is a better picture, yet not sure of the benefits.

Can you guys please advise your thoughts.

1GB ram in stick will bottleneck sometimes. It's better to get MiBox S to run everything smoothly.

Can you share which projector you got?

Yeah, you want a 4K capable device even if you’re streaming to a 1080p display. 4K devices have better support for decoding HEVC (H.265), which will improve image quality on 1080p anyways. They’ll support higher color depth like 10-bit/12-bit. And usually better performance (RAM, GPU).

I’d give up on trying to power anything by the USB port on your projector. Very few modern streaming devices, even sticks, can survive on the 2.5W-4.5W that comes out of those ports.

I am using Mi 4K Box and Amazon fire TV 4K with my Epson projector TW650 Home Cinema which is a best 1080p projector. Though you use a 4K setup your projector will project videos upto 1080p only. But still I recommend you use a 4K streaming box as they are all at the same price point and also your video might slightly scale up.

With Mi Box you get AUX port and a USB port which is a plus point.

The TiVo 4k stream is the better option.

Why bother? That projector already has android running on it.

The trouble with RAM limited Android TV media players is when you minimise Apps they get totally nuked from memory.

So when you activate those Apps again they have to go through the full, slowish startup routine instead of "quick resume".

2GB RAM is the minimum you want on Android TV devices, even if they are only outputting 1080p.
