Turn off Google Play Staff Picks?

by DonJimbo

Is there some way to turn off the Google play staff pick section that has appeared at the top of my Sony Android TV?

Nope. Google added this new "feature" and decided that disabling it would make it harder for them to deliver ads to your living room.

Best bet is to install a new Launcher or send feedback to Google: https://support.google.com/androidtv/answer/9654581?hl=en

This thing is infuriating. Not only is it just spamming ads at the top of my home screen, but it has completely bogged down my ability to navigate. I can only get one input to register in between each new ad loading, even when I'm trying to navigate through other apps/settings. From this morning to this evening my tv has gone from smooth to nearly broken.

So here was my solution. I uninstalled updates for Android TV Home app and set Google play to not auto update apps. So far it works.

Not that I can see, no. They call it a "new update" but really it's just more unwanted advertising annoyance. Good thing I'm replacing my tv in the next few months anyway. Screw this OS.

Right?! So annoying. Have been spending the last hour trying to find a way around this stupid addition to my home screen. Such a rude thing to do, really can't imagine anyone happy about it. Will definitely check out other launchers. Got any recommendation for Phillips TV?

I removed Google Play Staff Picks. First I would recommend you take a picture of your home screen because it will set your home screen apps into factory default.

Go to settings then apps then go to Google Play Store click uninstall updates then It will ask you if you want to use the factory default click yes. Then go back to the Google Play Store and disable it. No more Google Play Staff Picks. You will need to reorganize your apps. You will need to manually update your apps. This is a temporary fix. There should be a toggle button to turn this off.

Best thing you can do is leave a bad review here

This is the worst idea they have had. I hate the update with the ads. I did used the remove update posted by the helpful people on here.

This worked for me. Go to Apps, DISABLE "Google Play Services" and "Google Play Movies & TV", then reboot your TV.
