My Android TV box isn't showing up in Android TV remote app on my Smartphone.

So I have an android box running 8.1 and uts great but the remote is so bad. Instead of buying a new remote I was planning on using this app from Google on my smartphone. Theyre both connected to the same Internet connection, the android box is ethernet and my phone is WiFi(box doesn't have WiFi, but that shouldn't be the problem). When I open the app on my phone it searching endlessly but can never find my android box. I've turned off the box for 10 seconds and tried resetting it, but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Only Android TV devices will show up, not Android Boxes hooked up to TVs.

What box is it? It has to be running the official Android TV OS for it to be compatible with the app.

If it's a standard Android box then it won't work, as these boxes runs the same Android version as phones but reskinned to be remote friendly.
