How to browse the TV Play Store for compatible apps

by ShortyJc

I don't currently own an Android TV box, but considering getting one. From my understanding, the play store for android tv is curated and only has compatible apps. However, I cant find a way to browse this "TV Play Store". https://play.google.com has no way to sort by Android TV compatible apps. I can search for "Android TV" but I get mixed results. Is there any way for me to browse for android tv compatible apps before I make my purchase?

Easier to just think about what apps you watch and check it, or just ask in this sub.

What apps are you concerned about?

Try this - set your user-agent to the following on a PC in Chrome/Chromium:

com.android.vending/82073068 (Linux; U; Android 8.0.0; en_GB; BRAVIA 4K GB; Build/OPR2.170623.027.S32; Cronet/85.0.4162.4)

..and then navigate to https://play.google.com/

This will fool Play into thinking that it's talking to a Sony Bravia Android TV and you'll see that Google Play renders differently to how it normally would in a browser running on a desktop machine.

This workaround sort of works other than to say that Google Play on Android TV is a franken-hybrid of an android TV app and a responsive web application and it's this that makes Play store search and navigation work when you navigate Play on Android (or not actually work very well at all because Play on Android TV is basically rubbish by-design at the moment).

App compatibility is unusual on Android TV in my experience, in that a few apps not available or officially supported still work to a degree.

Best is to ask for someone with the android tv to look up the apps youre looking for.

Android TV Play Store doesn't available in website, the only way is to buy an android TV and the in-built Google Play Store has all the compatible apps for the android TV and google never adds an app to android TV if it is not compatible. You can't see those apps on websites. So you have to buy one.

You can find compatible Android TV apps on the Play Store website when you make a search with a specific keyword, but the result can be filter only if you already added an Android TV device to your account, you can filter the result by clicking on the "all devices" menu at the top of the search result and then select the Android TV device you already registered.

To select the smartphones and Android TV devices you have to appear in the menu, you must go to https://play.google.com/settings and click the checkmark next to every device you want to activate. You can also rename them if you want.
