Switching from Roku. Any differences in streaming apps availability?

by Gomulkaaa

Hello. I've used a Roku Ultra for the last couple of years but have become frustrated with it not offering some key apps such as Peacock and HBO Max. I also pay for services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and also have access to some cable channels, which I stream often. These mainly include: ESPN, Fox Sports, HGTV, A&E, AMC, TBS, TNT, Showtime Anytime, Starz, PBS, IFC, SyFy, Twitch, etc. Are these channel apps available on Android TV? Are there any major streaming apps that are NOT available on Android TV? Thanks in advance.

Looks like all those are available. Only major I can think of is AT&T Now that's not on Android TV.

It may not hold for a casual user, but Android TV is fundamentally more open than Roku, and when you consider that you can TECHNICALLY install common Android apps (not that you should) the library of apps VASTLY outweighs that of Roku.

Make the switch to android tv, you wont regret. You can do Chromecast. Android has loads of 3rd party streaming apps you wont get from roku, check out r/ttvreborn

Make sure to get a Google certified Android tv device and not a generic chinese android box as it won't support Netflix and Prime. Don't get the firestick, it maybe cheap, durable, and supports all the big boys apps, but it's not android tv. That UI is horrible.

Your best bet is to get a TiVo stream 4k. There's also Verizon stream tv and Shield tv (maybe too expensive for you). If you're in no hurry, you can wait for Google's new android tv device called Sabrina to come out.

One major one that isn’t on Android TV yet is Apple TV+, but I hear it is coming.

Otherwise, I think the rest you listed are on Android TV now.

Just a thought - but run both - I run a Roku Ultra and a Firestick 4k. Between the two I get coverage neither one alone could provide. Of course this assumes you have an open HDMI port on your tv to run both from.

ESPN and Fox Sports are unwatchable on my Android TV, but it is a older 2015 Sony that doesn't have the best specs. The video is choppy so I keep my $29 Roku to watch them perfectly.
