Set half speed animations on devs menu, set Force GPU accelaration and background process limit to 4.
Or buy Xiaomi Mi Box S.
How old is your tv? My old 2016 Philips set was pretty slow but my 2019 Philips set with the p5 processor is nice and snappy. I can recommend a tv with that processor if you ever want to upgrade it but right now, you’re probably better off with a separate tv box. I plan to get a shield once my tv stops getting significant updates
If you're expecting performance similar to Android on high-end smartphones or even mid-range ones, you'll only get disappointed. Your best choice is to reboot the TV every time the lag becomes unbearable to you.
This may not be what you want to hear but, I had a Phillips Android TV and I tried all of the suggestions to make it run better. Nothing worked, so I ended up returning it.
buyashield
I bought a nvidia shield. But if I couldn't afford it, I would have just gotten myself a fire stick for 35 USD. I don't give a shit about the Android on my tv.. I just care about the picture.
Philips is known that have problems with Google home integration like voice control, my friends have bought Philips Android TV's and neadher of them can't switch on TV by Google home integration and they complain on laggy interface, but with Sony XF series same category TV I can do all the stuff, Andoid 8. Pitty for Philips.
BUY A SHIELD...
the mibox S was on sale for 30 bucks at a few different times. just pick one up next time it's on sale if you can wait, or now for like 50 bucks if the lag is unbearable. i have both the original mibox and mibox S and i haven't had any performance problems. the original mibox had several bugged updates but that got all sorted out eventually. i don't see myself needing to upgrade from the 2 i have but knowing that in a few years, i only have to spend 100 bucks for 2 more devices with updated specs and OS instead of buying a new tv for those features makes me happy.
Make sure to clear cache of the apps.
It's a lower end TV, it's the best you'll get out of Android.
What is the tv model #?
There are 3 options:
Android tv Android tv with skin Custom operating system
Android TV looks like this https://www.android.com/tv/
If the menu does not look this, then it is probably not Android tv.
On a related note.
The most powerful MediaTek SoC for Android TV OS usage on a TV is now found in the 2020 Sony X900H which is packaging a MT5895 which includes a 1.8GHz 4 Core ARM A73 CPU, a ripper of an ARM Mali-G52 GPU & 3GB fast DDR4 RAM.
That add up to one snappy, fast Android TV experience.
There really is no need to even buy a Nvidia Shield when you get that sort of Powerful tech in a TV.
I cannot stress enough how important it is too look at the Chipset tech under the hood these days for long term Support & Snappy Android TV OS usage.
The question to ask is would you buy an under specced Smartphone when shopping for a new one ?
Same thought process should apply for any Android TV.
EDIT: Commiserations to all those that bought underspecced Sony Android TV's in the past. Those ones with old MediaTek MT5891/5596 and MT5890/5595 chipsets that work like a snail sliding backwards !
At least you can add a Nvidia Shield to them going forward.
Auto ram cleaner and periodically kill apps in background
Is it running true android tv or a modified version? If its Android TV remove the bloatware and GUI skin to run only android tv.
Check out: https://www.xda-developers.com/disable-system-app-bloatware-android/
Plug a Roku into it. Sounds like we have the same TV.
Time to buy a shield.
