Why don't you use Kodi or VLC for playback? You can install both directly from the Play Store.
Android tv launcher dies like to show you android apps. Install sideload launcher. Then on android tv launcher(home screen) go to apps row. Scroll to end,, click on "+". Add sideload launcher to your app row. . It will display all of your apps installed.
You could also install another launcher. I like the the Android tv launcher.
