Android TV what live TV service do you recommend instead?

I absolutely loved Playstation Vue, that was an awful shame. Unlimited cloud DVR was awesome. Its loss is missed.

This is the most interesting part of the article.

Luckily, it seems like pricing tiers are around the corner. In its announcement post, Google explains:

As the streaming industry continues to evolve, we are working to build new flexible models for YouTube TV users, so we can continue to provide a robust and innovative experience for everyone in your household without the commitments of traditional TV.

To me, that certainly reads as “pricing tiers are coming.” I certainly hope that’s the case.

I'm hoping they have an "All Sports" tier. Sports are the only reason I use YoutubeTV for. If they do go the route of pricing tiers, I hope they don't split different sports channels with different tiers.

ValuablePromise0

Sounds like they are becoming a true cable-tv company...

Austin24heck

Philo TV is the cheapest I've found.

howdidyourparentsdie

Everyone thought that streaming was going to be this new cheap alternative and it was for a while and in many cases still is but eventually it will be the same as cable or satellite....because no matter what company they have to pay the same content providers and when negotiation for channels comes up prices are gonna go up all the streaming will eventually be on the same price level as cable and satellite the only thing we can hope is that streaming offers more "packages" so hopefully we can pay cheaper for the channels we watch the most I watch basically 10 channels hopefully there would be a package of 25 channels and most of the ones I watch would be on it that's the best we can hope for

Rell_Wild

It's all about what you watch. Personally this is great news to me because it adds Viacom channels and I can now drop Philo.

One of the best in terms of customization is Sling. They're packages are more tailored to the type of TV you watch. Don't expect to pay much less though.

fletch44

Kodi with IPTV plugin as a source.

stfuandkissmyturtle

Popcorn time

pdaphone

Well Fubo raised their price to the same $65 today, and Hulu Live with suitable DVR I think is the same. So the full service ones are all now essentially the same price. If you want less, then look at something like Philo which doesn't have news and sports.

thisphuckinguy

Perfect time to increase prices!!!

laxmack

Just give me something that is a la cart. I don’t give a crap about Nickelodeon or HLN or whatever. I’d rather pay 20 or 30 bucks for the 5 channels I want thank 65 for the channels I want and 30 others I could not care less about!

cosmokra3er

Sling TV might be a better option at this point. Especially with their one year price guarantee. https://www.sling.com/whatson/announcements/sling-tv-one-year-price-guarantee

Thare187

I don't know how people call themselves cordcutters and then spend $60 on streaming cable.

NytronX

Private trackers + NAS + Nvidia Shield.

Way better selection, full control of content. No aids like censorship or DRM.

battierpeeler

a mix of over-the-air (50 mile antenna range), shared passwords (log into network apps with their credentials), and piracy (sports streams).

also netflix/prime for non-live tv.

hboinay

And then they wonder why there is so much pirating...

Kev_Fitz57

I recommend u look into iptv . I pay $8 a month every channel unlocked and PPV sports , 24/7 channel's. U cant get any cheaper than that

Achandab

Plex and never look back

nicholb

I use a combination of a Tablo over the air DVR for local networks and Philo to pick up the non broadcast channels I want.

Pferdestaerke

Channels DVR server running on a NAS, receiving its programming from Locast and the Channels DVR App running on Android TV is all the live TV I need.

Locast is free live TV streams of local broadcasters from many markets across the US. If you want to remove the donation nagging, it's $5 per month.

Since Locast doesn't have a DVR feature, Channels DVR runs $8 a month for the app.

Princeolivier

Free works with live channels Live channels

With a good virus protection, projectfree.tv has almost everything I’ve searched for recently. Hulu has been on POINT with their selection lately, too. Pluto.tv is an amazing site as well. They have some pretty nostalgic marathon channels that can eat up my whole day. Only complaint for that one is the advertisements. I’m over Netflix and YouTube and other places trying to force feed their soft core “originals” that share the same actors, plots, and BS. Hulu sort of seems to be headed down that route, but I’ll stick with it until it sells out with sex and bad acting completely lol. Good luck with your hunt!

Troll_Random

Current legal cord-cutting is why illegal cord-cutting is still the best option.

themick

Yeah, have no desire for the new channels they did add. I had to go, too expensive.

ToRedSRT

Beast TV

MelloGang17

I recommend YTTV. It's the best product on the market still

MeInUSA

I pay $110 /mo for TV and internet with Xfinity on a 2 year contract. I don't rent any equipment; I have a Silicondust CableCard tuner and my own modem. There isn't an offering that could possibly save me a reasonable amount of money. Cord-cutting is overrated and carries little value. The value is in cord-shaving.

seenhear

do you live within a 60 mile radius of a major OTA transmission antenna, with a reasonably line-of-sight path to the antenna tower?

If so, get a decent antenna, and an HDHomeRun tuner.

FlipprDolphin

black and white tv

Frainian

I wish I could pick specific channels I want and only have to pay for those

Like "$5 per channel, choose the channels you want" or something like that

It would be more expensive than normal if you want a bunch of channels but cheaper if you only want a couple

I doubt that'll ever happen though

Brooksjerald

With YTTV offering 6 different accounts on 1 account, you still can't beat it, unlimited DVR, $10 a piece

velishka

Streaming Live TV providers don't get it. Streaming TV is the same wolf in the sheep's clothes - avoid it by all means.

HTGeek2

A must-have for me is DVR. I hate commercials and like to watch my shows on my schedule.

ChrebetEighty

I pay $105/mo for Fios 1GB/1GB and a trimmed down cable package, mostly Sports and News. Own all my own equiptment(Router, ATV's, HDHomeRun Prime). Love it. Pretty sure you can swap out Sports/News for other genre's for a similar cost on Fios.

I do “Live channels” with TVirl and my IPTV service on my Shield. Works fine.

Prices for stuff, in general, go up with inflation/cost of living. This is pretty much a constant. In the case of digital media, the product has also gotten a ton better, more customizable, more selection, higher quality in a relatively short period of time. This illusion that we can/will/should get what we got before and more for less money is honestly pretty silly, IMO. Because why they tricked use using the word "youtube" or because some pure new sound companies like "Netflix" or "Spotify" have fun startup stories?

This whole "cord-cutting" phenomenon was always just a transition from media consumption over cable (that cord) to media consumption over the internet (cordless??).

Some new companies, in the right place at the right time got rich before the big boys moved over, and there were some real dips in consumer costs to lure people over to the other (sure, cordless) side, but the mega cable/media/broadband companies never lost an inch of control. They have always controlled the pipeline, created and controlled most of the content, and will eventually buy up all the smaller guys that helped with the overall transfer along the way.

We paid to enjoy TV/movies/games/music... and we will keep paying for it. You had a 150 dollar cable bill. Now you'll monthly have an 80 dollar interet bill, 60 for streaming TV, and 30 for a couple specific streaming services. And we still have an over the air antenna if you like it (maybe something like Pluto replaces that today?).

So who won? or was there ever even a revolution?

NISHITH_8800

Use kodi lol
