there are probably instructions on your vpn provider's website.

Basically, you need to download and install the Android mobile app or Android TV app offered by your VPN provider onto your new Android TV device. Run the app, use your VPN ID and password to log in, and then activate the VPN server connection you want.

SOME VPN providers may offer an Android TV specific version you can download directly from the Play Store on your Android TV device (which is only going to show you apps "officially" rated for Android TV use).

But in other cases, your VPN provider may only offer a regular Android mobile app version (aimed at phones and tablets) available for your Android TV either directly from the VPN provider's website or from some 3rd party app store like Aptoide, APKPure, etc etc.

The Android TV-supported apps are often easier to use, because they're designed to work well with a TV device's remote control clicker. The mobile app versions, on the other hand, are designed to work with touch-screen devices, and may or may not work well with a TV remote control. In which case, you can use a Bluetooth or USB mouse to control the app.

If you mentioned what VPN provider you're planning to use, it would be easier to give you specific advice for that particular case.

There is a TV service for 20 bucks a month. 54 channels of local and Cable networks.

I was going to get it for my car when I'm stuck in traffic for and hour and a half a day

I can't remember it's name. I think it starts with a letter P

What Android TV make and Model? What VPN company? Does it have an apps compatible with Android TV? That’s the easiest way! If not you need to downloads it’s APK and install it manually! But first you need to activate “you can install from unknown sources” Then install it thru USB drive if available or Clouds!

If Clouds: you need to download “X-Plorer File Manager” on google play store. You need APK downloads to your Google drive or Dropbox. Then instal it from there.

Or you can always use Aptoids

Then after installing you need a launcher like HAL launcher!

I have Nord VPN on my Android TV here in Europe but Google blocks using it for Netflix, Amazon, etc. If that happens, you can a fairly inexpensive VPN router. I watch blocked shows through the VPN on a 27" computer monitor instead of the TV.

Why do you even think your need a VPN. But yeah, you just need a provider that has an Android TV app.
