Is the Nvidia Shield still the best box to get for video game emulation?

by MinervaNow

Looks like the consensus a couple years back is that the Shield is the top dog. Is this still true? Also, did they stop making them, or are they just sold out online?

Unless an Android box comes out with a Snapdragon 845, 855, or 865 SoC, then yeah, the Nvidia Shield Android TV is the best for video game emulation right now.

Isn't x86 PC architecture better for emulation? Genuine question.

Kloop4ever

Still the top for sure.

Yes by far, it beats the Raspberry Pi 4 in performance and you can install RetroArch (that RetroPie is based on) right off Google Play Store. For the ARM/embedded devices it's the best.

If you want a box to play games first, media stream second, get an Xbox or PS4. Both blow the shield out of the water and both can stream fairly well.

I'm going to get downvoted for this but it's basically the truth whether you like it or not.

I have the 2017 version and Is one of the best emulator experiences I’ve ever had with such a “budget” device, playing PSX games at X2 resolution in 4:3 in my 4K 50” TV really beats the hassle of using the original hardware.

They are just sold out due to supply chain issues with covid. Every few days a small batch go online you just need to be quick.

If you can get one.

Amlogic is coming out with an s908 soc for those little Android tv boxes that might actually be better than the Nvidia shield. Just something to keep an eye out for. Rockchip also has a competitor named rk3588, but I don't believe they have a great reputation. Anecdotally I tried an rk3399 tv box and it was unusably buggy.

Depends what you mean by emulation. But if you just want to download and play games from the Nvidia service, it's pretty great. I think the Shield version of Orange Box is the best of any platform.

I haven't done anything with it for a while, but the Shield is also pretty hackable. Has anyone ever got a proper browser running on it?

I think the Shield is still the best streaming/media device out there. I have had multiple Firesticks and Firetv's, I've had a couple of Roku's, and tested out a few Android boxes and none of them compare to the Shield, honestly. My only complaint with the Shield is that the gaming part of it is not sufficient. I've had constant problems with it from the start, streaming from my PC. It flickers nonstop and the controller is very laggy. That's a major flaw because gaming is supposed to be one of the main attractions for the Shield. For me though, I love it in my bedroom, it is so powerful I just love it. My media server on my PC communicates very well with the Shield. Android TV finally got an update to Hulu as well, another big plus for my family. I love TV and movies, so while I resisted for years the price tag of a Shield, I decided three years ago to buy one and for a serious TV and movie addict, there isn't anything better out there.

I always hoped they would make a laptop with the Tegra X1 chip from the Shield. It could be light and relatively cheap, and there are enough good games on the Geoforce Now service to keep you busy on road trips. I guess the weak link is the business software -- G Suite will only get you so far, and MS Office for Android, while a good phone app, is not acceptable workstation software for Chromebook. Has anybody had any luck with WPS Office on Chromebook?

I usually bring two laps on the road anyway.

What happened to that atari console which was coming this year?

get an old computer and hook it to tv

Xbox One will run Kodi. I like having a separate digital optical out. I guess I'm old school! 🤓
