You need root access and an unlocked bootloader. The Shield has an active community over on xda which is a good place to start.

Other devices (like the Mi box) may have root exploits, but none of the Sony TVs do.

TWRP backup is a good place to start - but on Bootloader Unlocked devices only.

See the Freaktab forums and already mentioned Nvidia Shield forums.

All the Google Certified legit Android TV - AMLogic Chipset devices have encrypted bootloaders - so no rooting possible.

Having said that I heard passing mention of Rooting - via a FireTV rooting method - of the new TiVo Stream 4K dongle over in the TiVo subreddit. Big Maybe.

There is a full userdebug Oreo 8.0 rom for Xiaomi MDZ-16-AB.

There is a partial userdebug Oreo 8.1 rom for Xiaomi MDZ-22-AB.

These roms facilitate administrator level access to normally hidden internals.
