Thank you xiaomi for being an a**hole when it comes to updates

It's been one year since the last update for original mi box 3 international, no security patches no android update, no kernel update, no bug fixes NOTHING

while it has the exact same hardware as the new mi box

there is no reason to not updating the old model when it has the same hardware

robboman88

They updated the box from Android 6 to Android 8 that's already better then 95% of the boxes that never get any Android update at all.

I honestly don't mind since it works perfectly well as it is. Should I?

Both of my older Mi Box's have been working great for the past three years. Best investment ever. Saved me so much in cable box rental fees.

And just because it's not getting security updates doesn't mean it's not safe. As long as you don't sideload apps, you're safe. Get your apps off the google store. Don't do anything stupid with it. Security updates won't matter then.

For me its working good and i dont think android 6 to 8 is bad but the mi pad 4 from Xiaomi that comes with android 8.1 and stays with 8.1 is a joke

I’ve used the Mi Box 3 for about 3 years and in December 19’ I bought a Mi Box S.

I can say that they’re very buggy. The Mi Box 3 worked fine for at least 2 years and I had not faced an issue. Or maybe there were issues which I failed to notice. Before I decided to unplug it, it was restarting on its own every few minutes or whenever I open a YouTube video. Makes a loud thud noise when booting and I was shit scared it would ruin my speakers.

The Mi Box S... ...is something I have been very unhappy with from the start. I don’t even know why. I guess there are so many tiny little bugs that you can’t really explain but really annoys the shit out of you.

  1. From the time I inboxed it and connected it, it has been lagging a bit.

  2. Certain videos become slowmo, but the audio works at the normal speed. So the audio is well ahead while the video is still lagging behind.

  3. The remote keeps getting unpaired. Every few days I have to pair the same remote again. And it takes a long time for it to pair.

  4. I boot it or bring it back from standby, and it goes straight to Netflix. I have NOT pressed the Netflix button and yet it goes to it directly.

Apparently the latest software update fixes all this but for me, it hasn’t. I also reset the Mi Box S to factory and wiped all data, reconfigured every damn thing from scratch and it still acts the same. No change.

TL;DR I’m not happy with the Mi Box. FML.

there is actually a reason for them.

If you are concerned about security, you shouldn't be buying ANY Chinese tech company product. PERIOD.

This is pretty much the standard for Chinese customer support. It's why I'm switching over to the TiVo remote or Shield TV when I get the money.

Security updates are good. But I don't feel less secure without them, and the other way around..

While 'feature' updates are different story. For example, Nvidia forced 2019 shields for Netflix's atmos, while we all know previous models are definitely capable. Same goes with GFN servers 'updates' that never came.

I've got both and the newer S cannot play the Hulu app. Right now my 3 is more useful to me.

One of the best investment I have ever made. Bought in 2017, a few bug here and there, the infamous wake from sleep issue, otherwise quite happy with it. I am heavy user of Prime Video, but not a big issue, sideload it, works like a charm. Looking forward to buy the next iteration. Just wish they design a new remote similar to the firetv stick 4k and throw bigger storage in it.

PolyPill

Better than Sony. Expect a year of updates from launch by Sony then it’s abandonware. I’ll never buy another Sony Android device. Plus they always lock the boot loader.

ElectroPanic

Geez... stop whining for a budget device. Have a problem? go buy something else and stop posting that nonsense crap. If you think that the "security" patches is making you more secure or anything better than before, then you are wrong and this just proves that you have 0 knowledge how these things work. Go research a bit, maybe you'll learn a thing or two.

It's not the same hardware, though, processor is the same, but connectivity chip is different.
