TiVo Stream 4K is not the (An)droid you are looking for...(first impressions)

by CaptainSkunkbeard

Oh boy. This isn't ready for Primetime yet. Long list of shortfalls:

*No UHD yet from:

Vudu

(Edit: I can cast and get UHD with HDR10 on Vudu. No DV.)

MA

FN

*No VP9.2 from YouTube yet.

*Netflix only plays UHD when the device is set to 4K60Hz. This is an issue because some people only have sets that play DV content at 30Hz or less...or have "judder" with 24FPS content @ 60Hz.

*HDR10 or Dolby Vision seems to be always on for everything and can't be turned off. Maybe I'm too daft to figure it out? 🤷‍♂️ I hope that's the case!

*My biggest gripe & TiVo S4K's biggest sin: the device is not stable. I don't mess with CEC...so that's not it.

This thing gives me major handshake fits. I can't even get it to run through my "Atmos" soundbar...and I throw everything at it with no problems: Shield, Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast.

I have read reports of other peeps having signal problems and it should be TiVo's main priority to fix.

*There also needs to be button shortcuts on the remote to restart this box without unplugging/replugging or going through an onscreen menu to do so. If you know of how to do this, please share.

My issues so far. Got a black screen trying to go back to home. Had to unplug.

The TiVo guide does not include my local channels like the sling TV guide so I probably would just always use the original sling app

The input button on the remote opens my input menu on the tv but I can't change inputs.

I do like the genre section of the guide.

This is after 1 hour of playing with it. I have an extra mi box s unused that I paid 30 for. I might send this back.

Sounds like your impressions mirror mine.

I'm going to disconnect for actual watching, wait and see if there are updates to make it more usable. Maybe the new 'chromecast' will get us there...

I heard YouTube is going to ditch VP9.2 and replace it with the AV1 codec which was already implemented in the latest version of the Android Tv app, however, the only SoCs I know already supporting that codec are the Broadcom BCM72190/72180, the Realtek RTD1311/RTD1319 and the Amlogic S805X2, S905X4 and S908X.

Amended the OP about Vudu with casting information.

I'm not having any trouble at all.

Don't care about Vudu because I don't use it. Don't care about VP9.2 because I can't come up with a good reason to. I have a 4K60Hz TV, so no worries there. HDR10 / Dolby Vision hasn't shown up as a noticeably bad thing, yet. I don't have an Atmos soundbar.

I'm not discounting your issues; they sound valid. My point is that it sounds like you're expecting literally everything from it (and maybe that's fair, especially if they're advertised features!), but I doubt the majority of users care about the majority of what's causing you handshake fits.

Plus, that's probably why it was nearly 30% off: we're the beta testers. Not that I would pay $70 for it, anyway, but still. My expectations were for it to be as good or better than my Mi Box and Fire Stick 4K. My expectations were met.

And come ON TiVo. Allow me to use the inbuilt audio control.

I planned on using this in place of my.old mibox (which is on a Dell 4k monitor). No volume control and no way to disable.
