Gigabit Ethernet connection on mi box s ?

by abeel_siddiqui

I was about to get Ethernet adapter for my mi box so it could have a faster connection to my plex server. But i just realised that it has USB 2.0 and it could only allow max speed of 480mbps.... So should i just don't bother with the adapter anymore and go for WiFi or thats not the case ?.

Go hardwired, its the mother of all connections. Even with 100mbps i still prefer wired connection instead wireless even if it is 5ghz and 3-400mbps.

It's true, a USB NIC on a USB 2.0 port will top out at 480Mbps due to the limitations of the bus. But that's sufficient for streaming video, and the connection will be more stable and have less latency than wifi.

That said, you probably will be fine with wifi unless you're doing something that requires real-time response, like game streaming (Moonlight, Steam Link, Stadia, etc.)

Can someone recommend an USB to Ethernet? My wifi isn't that good at the moment.

Honest question: why would you need more than 480mbps for a single device plex streaming? As far as I know, even 4K video shouldn't need more than 30mbps.

In practice you can go up to 45MB/s ( 360 Mbit/s) in USB 2 - thanks to overhead and friends. In my case, my Plex is also on Gigabit port. So my Mi Box is the bottleneck. Despite of that I can stream 4K content without issues. My internet connection is 200Mbit/sec (~ 25MB/) and Mi Box maxes it out. It is a must accessory. Got mine for 8 bucks on eBay ( Gigabit ethernet with USB 3.0 hub). Also have an old ssd connected via same hub.

USB 2.0 ethernet adapters are all 100mbps. Not 480mbps.

You want the ugreen 3.0 adapter. You won't get 480mbps because nothing out there can max out 2.0 speeds but you'll get a solid 250-300 mbps. That's plenty for high bitrate 4k.
