Does any Android TV support live TV recording?

by Cuntyuuiiiiiiii

It looks like Android TV supports recording live TV: https://developer.android.com/training/tv/tif/time-shifting

But does any TV implement it? I'm specifically asking about the feature where you at a usb hard drive, and you can record TV into that hard drive.

I'm specifically looking at the below TV, but I'm asking the question in general.

I have Sony Android TV (2015) and it allows live TV recording on USB HDD.

It looks like you're in the UK or maybe somewhere else in Europe, so I don't know the answer for you for certain. In the United States, the Live Channels app on Android TV can be used with an over the air tuner to record live TV. I'm not familiar with how live TV works in the UK and there are geo-restrictions on some features of Live Channels, but you can do a search on recording in the Live Channels app in your country and see if you can get any information.

Edit: There are also paid apps (the above is the free way) to record live TV with a tuner on Android TV. You can look up Plex tuner compatibility and you can look at the Channels app (not the same as the free Live Channels app). Or look at apps specific to your tuner that may have a paid DVR service.

I have a Philips Android TV and i can record satellite tv broadcast just fine. Either programmed for a full show or as a pause recording.

Hey, I just looked at the specifications page of the TV you posted and it says it has PVR function. That's what you want.

You would need to add a USB storage device to record onto normally.

As for the Philips Android TV you mentioned, yes it can record live TV on an USB (fast) HDD, but you can play your recorded video only on your TV due to copyright restrictions. The encrypted video won't play on any other device.

I have a Philips Android TV and it has the ability to record live TV.

You can select something from the program guide to record in future, or press the record button on the remote at any time to start recording the channel you’re watching.

It can also pause and rewind live TV.

I've been helping a family member with a Sharp 50BL3KA smart TV. It has a Freeview Play "app" to view live digital terrestrial TV over a standard aerial, but even with an external USB HDD plugged in, there is no option to record, pause or rewind. I guess it's device specific.

I had one family member with an Android TV, a Panasonic, and it worked straight away with aUSB stuck in. Another family member had an old Sony that had an OTA update to Android TV. We stuck in a USB stick bit couldn't get it to record. What we had to do was disable the 'Youview' interface. Not only did this enable USB recording, but it also sped up the whole TV.

Yes, I'm in the UK. TVs come with a DVB-T2 tuner, or a satellite tuner, built into the TV.
