Why does this sub love to hate on the mi box (and mi box s)

by The12MonkeysWitness

Really. I have a mi box s and it's been one of the best purchases I've ever made. Perfect budget device. Almost a third of the price to the next good alternative (shield tv).

Full HD streaming works great. Interface is clean and snappy. Hardly face any hiccups.

Yes there are a few bugs here and there, and updates take their time. Storage and RAM may not be the best but what else does one want for streaming on a TV. In the end, it's a budget device. And for me this has been the perfect successor to my first gen chromecast.

A lot of it has to do with Xaiomi releasing a broken firmware, so it took a great device and made it into a less-great device, and Xaiomi is slow as hell to fix their mistakes. That being said, it's still not a bad box, at all. I bought two more of them during the last $30 sale just to have on hand.

AlexandreF

Same here. I like it very much.

WazWaz

Because people who have no problems don't rant about that.

I've had no problems, using it for years.

fckns

No idea why people hate Mi Box S. Most of the problems are fixable by factory reset and after that its all good.

I have it for 3 months and its my most used device in home. I can just fire it up, and watch Netflix or youtube in piece. I may eventually mod it a bit and play some PS1 games on it but for 60 euros its a good deal for a Netflix and Youtube machine.

Amazing device, I have mi box, I got it really cheap, yeah it does crash time to time. But perfect tech piece

Narcil4

because it's reddit. I love the mi box. a third of the price? more like a tenth if you're in NA, walmart had them for 30$.

Of all the gadgets i have ever baught this one is the best buy. Still running Oreo 8.1 and will not upgrade untill I am forced to.

dravenst0rm

I have a MiBox and I am amazed how good it is for its price. Great interface, fast enough, has all apps I need and remote is awesome.

BootyButtPirate

Love mine. I have fire sticks, Rokus and a full htpc. Mi Box is my first go to. I do use bootleg steaming apps over most mainstream paid ones so I don't have much experience with them. One feature I do use on most of my streaming boxes is a Eco power switch. When the TV is turned off, power to the box is disconnected. This forces the box to complete a power cycle everytime its turned on.

I bought it after reading great reviews with really good expectations. My first AndroidTV. Crashed at least once every 3-4h of playback (various 1080p stuff, no 4K) and was very slow from time to time. Spent a bit more on an Nvidia Shield which is just sooo much more polished.

I was happy to try it out but was really disappointed by the problems I had.

linuzel

Before the update that came a few days ago, mine was almost unusable, it needed a reboot every day, failed to reconnect to the network and playback stuttered on a lot of apps. Now everything is nice and stable, except CEC not working and that is still very annoying, especially since my previous device (a raspberry pi with rasplex) had this working perfectly. I hope an update can fix this, in the meantime it is collecting dust...

getupgetgoing

I really love my mi box. I love the dolby vision support, atmos support, having all the apps like apple tv+ or hulu and disney+, even if hulu has to be sideloaded and disney+ also has to be sideloaded, actually with disney+, 3 split files have to be sideloaded but it's ok because then you get stereo support which makes it all worthwhile, I'm really happy with it! Great stuff!

The MI box is affordable, but sometimes can be just outright nasty. I have another similar box made by Chinese company Skyworth. The Skyworth is bizarrely not Netflix certified, but it is far superior to the MI box in many ways. It runs Kodi and other apps perfectly and best of all - it always wakes up from sleep!! The Skyworth actually made me realise how crappy the MI box firmware really is. If the Skyworth could sort out their Netflix issue it would be the perfect budget Android box.

Mine is collecting dust somewhere because it failed to work reliably. Had to reboot it at least once a week. At least it was an inexpensive mistake.

clarkss12

It all depends on your setup.......... and what you expect from it.

Dlinefivenine

Full HD. So not 4k?

robboman88

My Mi Box is now around 3,5 years old and I'm still very content with it. I use it for Kodi and YouTube and it performs fine. Even got updated from Android 6 to 8 which I did not expect to happen so overall very happy with it.

adambellford

I have Shield TV and of course it's good. But for my uncle I recommend Mi Box. It's cheap, nice, and very convenient for his family usage.

fletch101e

It's the software not the box itself.

Android 9 is buggy as hell and it trashed one of my MI boxes which I promptly exchanged. On Android 8, everything is fine. I have a shield and it's had buggy Android updates as well.

Bart11

Yes it can be buggy sometimes, but I really like it. I added an external hard drive so I can use Live Channels' DVR to record OTA for free. Sideloading apps is easy and you can add Amazon store to sideload Amazon apps as well. Prime video and Hulu work fine.

Bodycount9

I bought two when they came out over three years ago. Both are still working fine. They've saved me hundreds in cable box lease fees so I'm happy.

It works for my streaming needs right now. YouTube TV and Plex. Yes it does have its bugs like AAC 5.1 output is messed up. And it sometimes drops the digital audio signal totally and goes 2ch stereo. But overall it's working fine.

Cbomb101

I have the mi box 3. I love the lil thing. I would like it to be faster but I paid like 80 or 100 aussie dollar maybe 1 year ago or 2. Great purchase for my room. It doesn't have a big selection of apps but I think that's the case for all Android TV os devices. It is the perfect 1080p device.

regex1884

I like the device but it just cannot produce an image nice enough in 4k or 1080p as the built in apps in my Samsung. Because of this I've stopped using it this week but have had it since 2016.

akisnet

Because it is a Chinese product, so they hate it or not even mentioned by media even Android sites. When I was searching to buy my first Mi box I thought it will give me cancer according to what I have read here 😂

Also many many Nvidia Shield hardcore fanboys.😂

MikeKuoO

For a budget device, fire tv or Chrome cast probably better.

codwapeace

Unless you need a specific application that doesn't work on Fire Stick 4K, Fire stick 4K is much better in almost all ways.

I used Mi Box earlier, but it was very sluggish compared to Fire Stick 4K.

Earlier, there was nothing comparable to MiBox other than $150-200 Nvidia Shield, but Fire Stick 4K changed that since it has been sold for $30 or even lower during sales.
