NVidia Shield TV (Not Pro) or Mi Box S

by nymusicman

Okay, so it's 2020. The Nvidia Shield Pro is nowhere to be found, forums are exploding with complaints about the Nvidia Shield TV (Tube) and I want to Upgrade my Roku Stick (3600x 2016 model) and Steam Link into one Android TV Product.

Is it worth spending $150 on the Shield or should I just get a Mi Box S and save the money? Right now, my only requirements are streaming Netflix, Hulu, Prime, Plex, VRV, CrunchyRoll, Disney+ and YouTube (Not TV) and the Steam Link app. I don't do LiveTV and other than steaming via Steam Link don't really plan on gaming directly.

I already have a dedicated Plex Server so there is no reason to wait on the Shield Pro to come back although if I could find one, I'd buy that instead. I just don't want to spend $150 on something I'd regret.

Oh and one last thing, I don't currently have a 4K TV. I don't plan on buying one either, unless my 1080 craps out on me. So that is not really a concern.

Which forums are exploding with complaints about the Shield Tube TV? I'm genuinely curious, I think mine is pretty great and I'd like to see what others are complaining about.

Don't buy anything until we see this years Chromecast device. It is supposed to have Android TV and a remote!

Tbh if the shield pro is worth $200usd(it is) then the mi box is absolutely worth $60 or less (walmart has had it on sale for $40 routinely) . I agree if you're gonna get a shield the pro is the way to go skip the tube, as evidenced by the fact you can get the tube and not the pro.

Yeah I second the nvidia shield tv , I spent 200 for the 2016 model and it worth every single penny, it can play every I throw at it including game and I am afan of kodi for media, it’s a beast even if you don’t need too much power all that extra whistle is always handy

if you do decide on the mi box s, i have one i bought to use but ultimately it wasn't powerful enough (wanted to stream 4 x 720p tv streams) so it's brand new in it's box and would sell.

4k firestick over the mi box s. Shield over both.

Always Shield, just look at the support they get.

No brainer, I'd go for the Shield every time. I'm more of a fan of the Pro than the Tube, but both are miles ahead of any Mi Box.

But the real question is, if all you're doing is basic streaming, why aren't you just looking at something like the Firestick 4K or Roku Ultra? Both are solid, capable streamers that are much cheaper than the Tube, and certainly more reliable (and supported) than the Mi Box.

Can you say more? Do you have the links? I have a tube and would like to know. (I had only a positive experience, so far)

With the latest Pi 9 update, MiBox S is totally a stellar value for shallow pockets. The Shield was just beyond my reach, and the MiBox fit the bill perfectly.

I would not get the Mi Box S when there are two noticeably faster, more modern Chipset budget Android TV Streaming only (no USB) options available in the USA, they are:

- Verizon Stream TV

- AirTV Mini

Personally I’m waiting for the new $50 DolbyVision capable TiVo Stream 4K which will have about the best remote you can get anywhere.

Otherwise look at the budget, snappy FireTV Stick 4K.

My shield experience has been pretty poor (2015 model) but it's great when it works.

For a long time it failed to wake up from sleep consistently and had to be power cycled. That finally got fixed sometime last year. Recently I had to switch to a wifi and, now, after waking from sleep the wifi "can't be detected" and the box has to be power cycled. The only recommendation is to prevent it from sleeping but that doesn't seem to work either (I've disabled sleep and the various CEC sleep options without luck).

NVidia Shield Pro... any way you can

From my experience I would go with the MiBox, I had too many issues with my OG shield tv pro.

Not that there are no issues with MiBox, but for the price I can tolerate it.

without 4K go for mi box s. Only reason to get a shield would be if you think you will upgrade to 4K. the mi box can do everything perfectly fine at 1080p.

After doing a lot of research, the shield tube is 32bit only. The pro model is 64bit. It doesn't matter much now unless you wanted to use dolphin emulator. But for the future if Google forces all app makers to make 64bit only apps, the tube could become useless.

Edit: and Nvidia could make the tube 64bit with just a software upgrade but they won't. It's the same exact hardware as the pro model except 2 GB ram instead of 3. So the hardware can do 64bit. They just don't want to do it.
