AndroidTV and Dolby Atmos

by frankathawanka

Hi there, bit of a noob question and if this has been asked before, but do the apps on and Android TV (Netflix, Disney+, Prime etc) support Dolby Atmos? I have an Atmos enabled receiver and have it working on my current TV through the NUC PC and Dolby Access, but considering purchasing an Android TV to do away with the PC. Or is Xbox One X a better option?

How do you intend to connect up the HDMI devices ?

eg.

Dolby Audio licensed Android TV media player > AVR < HDMI ARC > TV

?

The key requirement is making sure the Android TV Media Player is properly Dolby Audio licensed. Most of them are these days except the 2015/2017 Nvidia Shield. Subscription Internet video streaming Apps use DD+/Atmos.

Only the Nvidia Shield‘s and 2016 Mi Boxes can do lossless Bluray Rips quality HD audio passthru to an AVR, inc. Dolby TrueHD/Atmos.

Netflix definitely works with Atmos on the shield.

Get a shield and plug it in

What's wrong with using the NUC may i ask?

The audio will be passed to your receiver via optical out on the tv or perhaps eArc/Arc on the hdmi channel. I'm not sure if Arc even works when the audio isn't being sent to the tv but I'm using optical now for dolby with the androidtv plex app. My amp isnt atmos but hoping the new tvs support this output.
