Is the MiBox known to be buggy and unreliable?

by j_walks

I've had it for a few weeks, on the latest update, and if I knew that it'd perform like this I would never had bought it. I know it is cheap but it has been pretty rubbish.

It loses wi fi connection, freezes, lags and crashes/resets quite often (most sessions). Sometimes doesn't turn on. If I use it without anything going wrong I am surprised.

Is this just how it is for what is a cheapo product and if I pull the trigger and buy a Shield TV, will these things not happen?

Edit: I have done a factory reset, which did slightly reduce frequency of errors, but not a lot

You are just unlucky. Maybe broken product or something with software.

I have been using it for 3 years now and works without any problem at all.

Mibox is not a bad product. It's not the best but worth the money. Try a factory reset and see. If bought new, you could check with the vendor for a replacement.

Mine works perfectly fine.

Mine freezes first time i wake it up. It will reboot itself after going into an app. Other thing is hulu video freezes every 10-15 seconds while audio continues. Other then that i like for the orice i got onsale at walmart for $30

Repeating for the 755,452nd time.......

go to settings menu and perform full system reset and erase cache.

Don't sideload janky 3rd party apps that were not written with Oreo/Pie in mind

Mine has been good. I did follow the advice of resetting before and after the Android update.

I understand the "S" version is built shitty....which kind do you have?

It's hit or miss, tbh. I've had 4 miboxes by now, 1 was fine but turned buggy after some Xiaomi updates, 1 was buggy from the start, 1 never turned on and was returned and 1 worked pretty fine for what it is.

It's not worth the hassle if you have access to something like a shield, you pay what you get.

Also been buggy for me..

My first impression of the MiBox (I had a Box S 4K) was that it was easy to install and very versatile. But then the problems started:

  • The latest problem, which finally made me return the box, was that it jumps on and off my wifi like every 15 seconds. That made the box kind of unusable for me. (I found a fix on Reddit which says that you can connect to another wifi network. I connected it to my phones wifi hotspot and it worked. But that is not a sustainable solution for me. Nor is buying another router trying to make the MiBox happy.)
  • The mic in the remote did not work very well, often it just did not receive any input.
  • The box got slow after a couple of days so you had to restart it. (The fact that you actually can't power off the box without disconnecting the power is kind of bad.)
  • The casting stopped working. When the casting worked, the sound was always distorted and bad.
  • When streaming with Plex, there were small stutters like every 10 seconds. Not just when streaming 4K but also full HD. Scrubbing in the timeline was very slow and often made the movie stop playing and even crashed the app many times.

I updated the OS version to Android 9, made factory resets, but it did not help.

Mine stops having wifi, freezing and stuff...and it feels like its getting worse every day now. Thinking of making a full reset....

Mine sure has been! Won’t buy another one

Mine drops wifi every now and then, but more annoyingly, it frequently freezes. It's in the bedroom so I don't use it often, but it's pretty annoying to get into bed, grab the remotes... and then having to get out of bed again to reset the bugger.

Downstairs I have a Samsung smart tv, with rather crappy apps... but it works. If I ever decide to get an Android TV box there, it won't be a MiBox, I'll definitely go for a Shield TV.
