Can a Xiaomi Mi Box Suffice at playing 4k HDR on a Tv?

by MattTorrance

I read a lot of contradictory opinions about whether the Mi box can effectively play 4k HDR content on Tvs. For the record, my Tv is a Panasonic oled, and the Mi box would be wired to a 3.0 usb external ssd.

What is your opinion? Can a MI box handle 4k or not?

It does the job done. More than decent. Don't listen to Shield fanboys. I have 5 Mi boxes 3, 1 Mi Box 3S, upgraded Shield TV Pro 2019 from Shield 2015.

4K Streaming HDR is very good under 5Ghz network. Shield is overpowered but the right device to play games!, emulation, run it as Plex server, play super high bitrate files like 80mpbs burned 4K Blu-ray discs. Even Steam Link works flawlessly on Mi box. Android TV since 8.0 is very optimized.

Yes the Mi Box can do high bitrate 4K HDR Bluray Rips just fine if you can get the data into it properly.

ie. By using either a direct connect USB HDD or a USB3 > Gigabit LAN adapter.

You even get Kodi auto Frame Rate Matching and if you have the original 2016 Mi Box, running Oreo 8.0 - Kodi HD audio passthrough inc. Atmos.

Honestly tho if it’s just Kodi you want to use the superior option is to get a AMLogic S905X2 chipset device like the Mecool KM9 or KM3 and run the optimised CoreELEC Kodi on it from a Class 10 U1 Sandisk microSDHC card:

That sort of combo will be superior vs anything Android Kodi.

Hell my CE Kodi combo even does HDR10+ playback to my 2019 Panasonic OLED.

My service provider has 4k movies, and I have a decent internet speed, but I seem to be unable on my Mi box to fully play without buffering those movies... frustrating. The only option I can think of is buying an Nvidia shield (2019 edition) which can upscale a regular movie to look like a 4k one..the Nvidia shield is better equipped than a mi box if you can afford it.
