Are Sony the only ones who produce inferior Android TVs???

by Kane-CISC

I do not say this lightly, as their screen and Bravia motion technology is very good, however their Android software implementation is absolutely terrible! They forgot to add the ability to connect USB-to-Ethernet adapters in their USB ports!??? Who does that in this day and age???

A friend tried 4 USB to ethernet devices on his TCL, ALL worked.

Another friend tried 2 USB to ethernet devices on his LG, WORKED!

Another tried 3 USB to ethernet devices on his Samsung, 2 of them WORKED!

I tried 8 USB to ethernet devices on my Sony AF9, NONE of them worked.

I wish I never jumped back into Sony land now, should have known they'd do stupid things like this with their devices, no wonder everyone is buying LG these days. At least I know where to go on the next upgrade this christmas.

If anyone knows of a workaround with Sony AF9, please do tell. Effectively I need a good 1GBit connection to the TV, unfortunately the wifi doesn't cut it due to interference and reduction in wifi speed, and the in-built 100mb (yes, really! 100Mbit old tech!) ethernet connection is a total joke.

My Bravia has a Nvidia Sheild plugged into to it, Android TV is far too slow to use natively on the TV.

Why not use WiFi? I have the Sony KD-49XF8096B and just use the Wifi. The wifi is faster then the 100mb ethernet and I have had no issues at all with it.

Kodi and Netflix run like a charm on the Android TV.

My Sony XG95 have got a Ethernet Port itself, I believed that more Sonys are having one.

Hmmm Should check/test on my Philips, pretty happy with it, with some minor issues...

love my Sony Bravia TV, but the native android TV never works right. For some reason I always get choppy video. Luckily I have a several year old nvidia shield that works great.

whenever android TV is mentioned, nvidia shield is always the answer.

Really curious as to what your use case is for needing more that 100Mbit.

I have an Ethernet connected Nvidia Shield plugged into my older (not smart) Sony TV in the living room and I have a Sony XBR65X800G Smart TV Ethernet connected in my basement media room. Both are running Android 8 and both perform equally well. Admittedly I'm not streaming 4K but I get no buffering on either, and the performance of the android UI is fine on both. Sure it would be great to have the option to plug in a USB Ethernet connection but I haven't found it necessary yet, for regular TV viewing. I'm using an IPTV service for my live TV and streaming prerecorded content from a media server on my LAN.

I have a brand new Philips, same story. Built in Ethernet is 100Mbps only and USB adapters do not work :/

Have also tried to get gigabit Ethernet to work on my AF8 (A8F) without success.

Its a real shame.....

However I disagree with you on the performance of the SoC

After cleaning up the android OS I am getting a satisfactory performance 😃

I understand your frustration, many people want a single device solution or rightfully expect a premium tv to have a premium streaming experience, but if you have the cash for an AF9, you should really only consider the Nvidia Shield or the Apple TV.

I have tried two USB to ethernet dongles, one ugreen & anker, neither worked. Bit of a pain as it struggles to stream a 4k movie. Doesn't seem to be anyway to improve speed apart from buying 3rd party android box.
