Mi Box 3 does not detect Windows hotspots

by nemovich

Hello

I just bought a Mi Box 3 and to my big surprise it does not support connections from a windows wifi hotspot! It won't even detect and show the hotspot name while all my other devices (phones, Samsung smart tv !) connect just fine.

The box seems to only accept Hotspots from mobile phones.

I had a live chat with xiaomi support about this and the person confirmed it to me saying that it was a compatiblity issue!!!

Does this sound right or xiaomi support just wanted to get rid of me? Because the fact that the box doesn't support windows Hotspots is insane!

There shouldn't functionally be much of a difference between a Windows hotspot and a mobile hotspot in terms of how the networks are broadcast, is it possible your computer is maybe broadcasting 5ghz and the mi box only supports 2.4ghz?

There are two different kinds of wifi networks - ad-hoc and infrastructure. By default, Windows will set up a shared network connection as an ad-hoc network, and not all devices can connect to ad-hoc networks.

You can set Windows to mimic an infrastructure hotspot by following these steps. Hopefully this will let your MiBox connect.
