I noticed when my Bravia is connected via lan I can wake it via the Android TV app, but not when on wifi. Do I really need wake on lan enabled on my router?

Do you have the "Remote Start" option in Network settings switched on?
"Allows a mobile device to power on the TV from standby mode. This may increase standby power consumption."
Mine works via WOL but it's wired. Over wireless not sure, you might need wake on wireless lan (WoWLAN) but not sure. See if you can enable it and if it works.
