Replacing my old TV - should I get a stream box for my use case?

by fiestaoffire

I currently have a Chromecast Ultra and use it to stream Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, YouTube, Twitch, Videostream (for local files) and mirror tabs for anything else from my computer (though there's a quality drop for that), which is also in my bedroom.

Most of the content I watch is in 1080p and I've never been bothered by that (so yes, the Ultra is overkill, which is why I want to make sure if a stream box fits my needs).

Since my new TV is a 2019 model, the built-in apps shouldn't be too sluggish just yet. Further, the only Chromecast problem I have is mirroring tabs, and I have a PS4 (not Pro) that I could hypothetically use for some streaming. I could also connect my tablet to my TV to avoid having to screen mirror as well.

I've looked at spec sheets and features lists for a couple of stream boxes and nothing's really caught my attention, but maybe that's because I've never used one. Maybe a stream box would be better in a few years when my TV stops getting updates? Thanks in advance.

Your tv and chromecast should be fine for you for now wait till something catches your eye

If you are happy with the Chromecast way getting a new TV won't change that. Do you find yourself using the TV apps? Your described use case should fit quite nicely in the Smart TV sweet spot. As well as great for Chromecast. By the way you-all ways want 4k capable hardware whether you use 4k or not. It about he speed of everything the device does.

Shield for your use case is an overpriced solution.

I have 5 Mi Box 3, one Mi Box 3S and Shield. Get Mi Box at $60, absolute perfect for 4K HDR 60p streaming. If you are interested playing games and you are in emulation go straight to Shield. Shield can function as Plex server too.

Also a good upgrade from Chromecast, you will have your remote with Assistant like a boss and Chromecast capabilities are built in on Android TV.

Don't listen others saying things like Mi Box is cheap so it is for cheap TVs. Both Shield and Mi Box are on official Android TV site.

I would suggest you to go through netflix device compatibility list. I believe prime video supports atmos on all 4k android TVs. Mi box is an option if you are buying a mid range TV.
