Hi, Ive got a phillips 4k tv and I usually play movies directly on it from my external SSD. Sadly, it only plays 20-30GB 4k HDR movies, but all the high bitrate movies lags, stutters on it. (Talking about 60-90mb/s bitrate movies.) Thats where the mi box S came to mind. So the question is, is it capable of playing those movies stutter free? Thanks in advance!
I've played Kimi no na wa (4K HDR at 50GB) on my Mi Box S using Kodi and it plays fine.
I tested a remux of John Wick 3, it's size is close to 80gb (don't know the exact bitrate, but the size might give an idea.
I only have a regular mibox 3 (no s) and it played flawlessly, so the S model should have no problem.
External USB btw, network does not work fine with so high bitrate.
You can use something like a Ugreen USB3 > Gigabit LAN adapter to playback 4K HDR Rips just fine across a home network. Direct (NTFS formatted) USB HDD is fine as well.
100Mbit LAN simply will not work either for high bitrate, large GB 4K Rips.
Those using WiFi for such 4K Rips content are complete dreamers. Completely unreliable and in 99% of cases it will not work.
The original 2016 Mi Box, model MDZ-16-AB even does Kodi and Atmos HD audio passthrough. The "S" model does not.
I can't get mine to direct play a full Blu-ray rip without stuttering. My nVidia Shield has no issues. I'm not sure if it is because of the WiFi or the box can't handle it. My Shield TV is connected via hardwire to my gigabit network. The nVidia Shield TV will handle a full 4K rip (hardwired) with no problems at all.
Most of my Blu-ray rips are at a max 40Mbps. I'm using Plex to serve them to the Android TV devices.
There’s also a couple of speedtest apps on the App Store.
I don't own a Mibox, but I've had trouble with H.265 encoded movies on an S905 chip.
It's done everything H.264 that I've thrown at it though.
