trouble setting up a chinese Mi box S in canada

by quietlyhardcore

my in-laws are here from china to visit for several months, and they brought a new Mi S from china so they can watch some chinese shows. Everything is set up and and signed in, but they can't watch anything, it keeps telling them they can't watch in this region. Is there a fix for this or somewhat easy hack? the box is all in mandarin, so i can't really help with anything too in depth. Any help would be appreciated.

You need to use vpn to connect to China IP address in order to watch the apps you have , since your apps are region block , you will need vpn to unblock it

What is the exact model shown on silver label on bottom of device?

IF the model is MDZ-22-AB, it will be a simple matter to adjust settings/language to English. From there you can select correct region and language.

IF not, you are limited to choosing streams from Chinese app store that are not subject to GFW and Chinese enforced copyright and license restrictions.

Nearly 75% of the 'free' content available on the Chinese domestic market is geolocked when outside PRC. There will still be content available but you'll need a persistent search to find it.

Good luck

Hey! If you can't get an answer here, maybe post it in r/MiBox or r/Xiaomi. Sorry I can't be of help, I've never been to China or Canada.

That’s likely Mi Box 4C model for Chinese maket, rather than Mi Box S for global market. The former model has different software without Google services. The restrictions you are seeing are probably based on your IP address.
