Good morning.
Unfortunately yes...
I have a sony xf75 and yesterday I updated it by hand, but the security patch is from August. and at the moment it is still with android 8, you are worse, that you are with android 7 ... and the difference is noticeable, since my factory TV came with android 7 and now the menus are more fluid and I like the interface more.
Anyway, I have the feeling that Google does not take the issue of Android TV seriously, as it happens with cell phones ... and the big problem with updates.
Depends on how old your tv is. Eventually every device stops getting updates.
It is not. Go over to the Sony Support site, download the latest firmware and upgrade manually using a good USB stick. I bought a Sony XF90 TV recently and it did not have the Oreo upgrade, I did it manually because there are significant improvements.
Yes it is normal and yes it is bad. I suspect if a serious security issue were to arise then security patches would become available. It is bad that we would have to have a security issue before getting an update. Would be nice if all companies were pro-active.
I have a Sony Android TV. So I bought a Nvidia Shield TV. Worries gone
Did you try to update manually? Check your TV Model's Support page from Sony's website.
This is why you don't want a smart TV.
TV OEMs have no reason to use better CPUs, and they definitely have no reason to provide updates.
I refuse to use the integrated smart TV function of any TV unless it gets prompt updates and I know how long they'll support it

You can turn your Bravia with Android TV essentially into a dumb tv and use an Nvidia Shield or similar instead using the built-in Pro Mode settings to disable most of the Android TV features.

Then get an Nvidia Shield so your Android TV stays up to date.
Avoid Sony if you want updates, Philips for instance is much better at this.
r/bravia
I have a Sony Bravia, bought 2 years ago model is a bravia 65850E, I have the latest version of Android for TVs, I think its version 8 and also recdived updates many times. Your model is probably not reveiving updates anymore
Depends on the TV model but when I got mine it would report there were no updates even though I knew there was one. Turns out it was a bug with that version. I manually updated via USB and that took care of it, and there have been many updates since!
Bravia ATV2 Platform in EU... Yep. That's normal.
Welcome to the Android Tv world
Android TV OS running on old Sony’s or cheap branded TV’s is the greatest incentive out there for buying an Nvidia Shield because then you know you will get proper after sales Firmware and OS support.
Nvidia should be thanking these pathetic TV vendors.
Welcome to Android, unfortunately.
I'm gonna be a little blunt here.
I think a lot of people have too high expectations from these companies(myself included). There are just no way that your run of the mill TV, smart appliance going to have stellar security. Unless you're buying enterprise level stuff, or something from Apple, Microsoft or Google that is directly supported, you shouldn't expect it to be secure. And even the big players can screw it up.

This is why I don’t buy Sony stuff. They rarely update and have no problem abandoning devices after a year.
