There is always a red light shining from the backside of the unit even when pwer is off.

That's the optical S/PDIF port (for digital audio output like PCM 2.0, Dolby Digital and DTS) and it can't be turned off.
The normal form factor has a bigger connector with a cover on on top but that form factor doesn't allow to have a cover.
I believe that is for optical audio.
