No security updates for AndroidTV (Sony)

by Kwooksplash

In January this year I bought a Sony TV. A KD-60XF8305, to be precise. Some time after the purchase I installed the update to Android 8.0. This update had the Android security patch level "1 November 2018". And it remained on that patch level since then.

Since November last year, there were official Android security updates every single month and a lot of them had pretty severe issues fixed. This is something that I consider to be pretty much unacceptable on a device that is connected to the Internet at all times. (And while it is not an issue for me: A lot of people have this thing in the same Wifi where all the guests of the house connect to with their malware-filled mobile phones...) A lot of said issues are well known as of know and are known to be exploited.

Also this is a 2018 model year and not an old device. I am pretty much speechless at this point...

You can turn your Bravia with Android TV essentially into a dumb tv and use an Nvidia Shield or similar instead using the built-in Pro Mode settings to disable most of the Android TV features.

That's Sony for you. But honestly, if security and updates are important to u, don't buy another Sony TV.

Also, just make sure that there aren't any updates listed on the support page for your TV, if not, your out of luck and just have to deal with it like I'm doing. My TV is on 7.0 and has a security patch from God knows when

I have exactly the same TV as you and my Android security patch level says "1 May 2019" .. I think my latest update is this one: https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/downloads/00016211

I had a Sony TV and had to manually install its updates all the time. They wouldn't never install OTA. Plus, it was the shittiest TV ever with all the unsolvable problems I had with it. I returned it, got a Samsung and a shield. All is good now. Oh, Nvidia is on point with their updates.

I also manually updated by downloading the 8.0 firmware to a thumb drive.

As of today I just received a new update, security patch January 1 2020 via manual scanning OTA!

Have auto update on but it never works.
