I've looked around and haven't gotten a clear answer. I want to buy a Xiamoi Mi Box S and plug in my 2TB HDD to play videos locally. Have those issues been fixed?

I really like the Mibox s but it is a bit frustrating that I can't get Kodi working to accept hdds. One I'd the issues is that the box is so limited in terms of storage and connectivity. I'm considering buying a mecool Km3 as a second box. The KM3 is much better specs than the MiBox (it has 2x us: one of which is usb 3 I believe, 64gb ram and gigabit ethernet. It is Google certified abd already running android pi. In theory it is a mibox killer but has one big flaw. All mecool boxes have been banned by Netflix because they cheated somehow before. Apparently you can sideload Netflix but only SD version.
If you have the mibox 3s and feel limited by the connectivity you can buy a USB hub + ethernet dongle. Because the mibox 3s sadly only has a USB 2 connection the USB hub will of course only operate at USB 2 level and (I believe) the ethernet will only be at 100Mbs level. Nevertheless it is likely to be a faster and more stable Internet connection than the WiFi for many people. With the hub you can increase the integrated storage with a USB flash drive which can be formatted to integrate with the internal storage allowing much more space to add apps etc. The advantage of a hub is that you can also add a large HDD at the same time. I have the uGreen model which is relatively high quality. There are other non branded units at maybe half the price.
Yes mi box s with kodi can read 2tb HDD. A new pie update for mi box s also enables read and write to usb drives.
You can safely go ahead and buy mi box s
I have a new Mi Box S and it plays videos from my 2TB HDD no problem. I don't seem to be able to add folders on the HDD as sources on the Plex app however.
