Mi Box S or Nexus player

by Narcil4

I want to buy a Mi Box S for an old 1080p Bravia. Most reviews for it seems to be that it's great at 1080p but isn't fast enough for 4K. is that pretty accurate? I have a few Mi devices and they are all outstanding, but some reviewers call the Mi Box the worst Mi product...

I just want to connect a usb drive for movies, some Netflix and YouTube. does prime work? might also setup a plex server. They both have a 2x2 MIMO chip so connectivity should be similar?

Google products longevity is a worry about the Nexus player. Also have a google music account are either supported?

are there better sub-100$ 1080p options? I'm in Europe if that matters.

I've got the first MiBox (not S) and have no issues at all with 4K content, prime works sideloading the apk but has a weird aspect ratio glitch every now and then, solved by a quick reboot.

The Nexus Player is discontinued and the OS is not supported by Google anymore, go for the Mi Box S, its OS is currently on beta testing (Android TV 9 Pie) so it would be a great investment for your needs if you can't get a Shield anyway.

Google Play Music app is available as a system app on Android TV firmware for every certified device out there.

Current inexpensive devices besides the Mi Box S with Netflix certification in Europe is:

- Engel EN1015K (it's the Ematic Jetstream opposite with different name for the Europe market)

Current inexpensive devices without Netflix certification you can get in Europe are:

- Mecool KM3: http://www.videostrong.com/Google%20Certified/100.html

- Mecool KM9 Pro: http://www.videostrong.com/Google%20Certified/98.html

Current expensive devices in Europe are:

- Nvidia Shield TV 2019 (With Netflix certification).

- Wetek Air: https://consumers.wetek.com/wetek-air/ (Without Netflix certification).

- Minix Neo T5 (Without Netflix certification).

Avoid the Mecool 2GB RAM Classic if you need reliable WiFi. It's WiFi has numerous showstopper problems.

S905X2 chipset devices will be noticeably snappier and running a further optimised Android TV Pie vs the slower S905X and S905D running Oreo.

Good luck trying to run a Plex server on anything but a 16GB Nvidia Shield.

Prime doesn't work on the Nexus player, even casting it will not work. I'm currently using the Nexus player but trying to decide if I should upgrade to the Mi Box S or spend the extra money and get a Shield.

Getting a warranty repair of Mi Box S is a pain, there is no warranty information anywhere. I don't think they have presence in US. There Chat and phone are answered from Asia. To chat with customer support one need to create a account. After being refused multiple times, when I did manage to talk to someone, and she said she will send me a email with details to a warranty return. And nothing comes back, I did check they had the correct email address. They will not even give us a reference number, they want me to wait for email and nothing comes. Most of them keep referring to a scooter warranty, when i am calling them about Mi Box S. The device is out of 90 day warranty or they tell me no returns.

Do not get the nexus player. I have 2 as secondary devices and they crash and have trouble all the time now. I have a mi box, it's better but not the best.
