How to check whether 4K TV really is 4K?

by ZorArtic

I recently bought a 4K TV, and the UI was unusually slow. Like laggy, then I tried downloading YouTube and tried playing 4K video but under 'Quality' the maximum supported resolution is 720p60. Now Im wondering whether this TV really even is 4k. How can I determine if it's 4K, like a test or something.

Can your internet / wireless connection handle the speed for 4K?

I seriously doubt that a major brand name TV advertised as 4K isn't 4K. 🙄 Is it probably your internet or wireless connection that won't support the bandwidth needed to play a 4K video.

More likely is that the YouTube video you're trying to play isn't really 4k.

This isn't really an Android TV question. Unless you're asking what Android TV device you should buy to stop using the weak smart features built into your TV?

The Kodi wiki has a page of test files, and one of them is to help see if something is really a given resolution or not. Not sure off hand if they have one for 4k, but it would be a good place to start looking.

4K TV is a TV product with physical resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels. It can receive, decode and display video signals of corresponding resolution. The resolution is 4 times of 1080p TV. The audience can see every detail and close-up of the screen.

If the pixel dots composed of red, green and blue (RGB) primary colors on the LCD TV screen panel are arranged in sequence this is the real 4K panel.

The false 4K panel is composed of RGBW pixels.

Your connection isn't fast enough for the YouTube app to allow you to stream in 4k. The official app does not let you decide the playback quality, it decides based on connection speed.

Sideload the app called Smart YouTube TV , which allows you to force any resolution you want regardless of connection speed. Even then, not every Youtube video is shot in 4k, so you have to search Youtube specifically for videos offered in 4k.

Or buy a blu-ray player (Xbox One S) and Planet Earth II 4k. Or use X-plore File Manager to play a 4k video file from your Google Drive if your TV supports the format.

edit: nvm, I see it's a Samsung. No go on installing those apps. GG. Get a blu-ray player or upgrade your connection speed via your ISP.

count the pixels?^/s you can't really be sure any other way since if it's fake it will show resolution in any hwinfo apps, but maybe you can get panel info from one of them and google that to check the actual resolution
with that said I wouldn't really doubt it's panel is actually 4k since even cheapest TVs come with it

Personally, an easy way is to run 4K UHD video on TV by changing the video resolution to the highest available, say 2160p. If that is playable, then it is 4K.

Normally, you need to check all devices of your TV support 4K. Even if your TV and sources are 4K, if you have something else in the HDMI signal path that does not support 4K, then the TV will not be able to pass that signal through. For example, some 4K Blu-ray players and gaming consoles offer dual HDMI outputs to get around this issue. They will let you send the 4K video to the TV via one HDMI output and send the audio to the receiver or soundbar via another. But many 4K devices don’t offer this option.

If all your devices support 4K, while you still cannot get 4K or HDR on your TV screen with the correct content, you might need to check your HDMI cables. Older, non-high-speed HDMI cables worked fine for 720 and 1080 resolutions, but they fail to pass the full 4K signal. Once you have all your sources upgraded and properly set up to pass 4K HDR, I suggest you had better optimize the performance of your TV.
