Mi Box 3 Auto Refresh Rate changes resolution

by djgg91

Hi all!

I have a 4K TV, but since I use the Mi Box mostly for 1080p contect, I have force-set the resolution to 1080p 50Hz (auto-switch resolution is off) for taking advantage of the better TV upscaling features.

The problem comes with auto refresh rate switching apps like SIPTV, Perfect Player, Plex or even the Refresh Rate tool. They all can change the frame-rate according to the content without a problem, but they also change the resolution to 2160p, losing all the upscaling features of the TV in the process.

Is this a known problem of the Mi Box?

What TV are you using? Newer TV's can create 24p from a 60p signal:

Here you go:

  • Samsung : Automatic most of the time, but inconsistent – sometimes 24 fps video will have judder via 60p and 60i. For 480i and 1080i video, go to Menu > Picture > Picture Options and set  ‘Film Mode’ to ‘On.’
    • On some TVs, setting 'Auto Motion Plus' to 'Custom' with both sliders to 0 will fix it without adding any soap opera effect.
  • Sony : Go to Menu > Picture and Display > Picture Adjustments. Set ‘MotionFlow’ to ‘TrueCinema,’ and set ‘Cinemotion’ to ‘High.’
  • Vizio : Go to Menu > Picture > More Picture and set ‘Film Mode’ to ‘Auto.’
  • LG : Go to Menu > Picture > Picture Mode Settings and set ‘Real Cinema’ to ‘On.’

No need for refresh rate switching and the annoying delay that comes with it. 25fps European content is a different story though as that won't fit in 60Hz.

Yes it is a known problem exactly as you described it:

Sharper images are produced by a modern 4K TV when you let them hardware upscale all non 4K content vs cheap externally connected media players.

It's not a problem, it chooses the best available resolution 4K, bigger bitrate and suitable frame rate.
